Please cite this article in press as: Carrivick, J.L., (2011), doi:10.1016/j.jhydrol.2011.11.026 Accurate quantification and effective modelling of water temperature regimes is fundamental to underpin projections of future Arctic river temperature under scenarios of climate and hydrological change. We present results from a deterministic two-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled with a heat transfer model that includes horizontal advection and vertical water surface energy fluxes. Firstly, we model longitudinal, lateral and temporal thermal heterogeneity of a braided reach of an Arctic river; Kårsajökk, Sweden. Model performance was assessed against water temperature data collected at 11 monitoring sites for two independent 1-week time periods. Overall, model performance was strongest (r values >0.9, RMSEs 0.6 C and ME < 0.4 C) for main channel sites with relatively deep fast-flows where water temperature was comparatively low and stable. However, model performance was poorer for sites characterised by shallow and/or temporarily-stagnant streams at the lateral margins of the braidplain, where a lag of 60–90 min persisted between the modelled and measured water temperatures. Secondly, we present novel automated statistical analyses and quantify channel thermal connectivity and complexity. Our results lead us to suggest that with further development our modelling approach offers new opportunities for scenario-based predictions of response to environmental change and to assess anthropogenic impacts on water temperature. 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Spatio-temporal changes of water quality variables in a highly disturbed river

Quality of river varies widely depending on the land use in the catchment and environmental factors. Many rivers in developing countries are unhealthy because they contain harmful physical, chemical and biological agents. Zanjanrud River, located in Zanjan Province, Iran, where recently faced human intervention needs a regular monitoring from upstream to downstream for sustainable management. H...

Spatio-temporal agent based simulation of COVID-19 disease and investigating the effect of vaccination (case study: Urmia)

Proper management of epidemic diseases such as Covid-19 is very important because of its effects on the economy, culture and society of nations. By applying various control strategies such as closing schools, restricting night traffic and mass vaccination program, the spread of this disease has been somewhat controlled but not completely stopped. The main goal of this research is to provide a f...

Spatio-Temporal Variation of Suspended Sediment Concentration at Downstream of a Sand Mine

The growing population led to greater human need to use natural resources such as sand and gravel mines. Direct removal of sands from the bed river leads to increase suspended sediment concentrations in downstream of harvested area and creates other problems viz. filling reservoirs, change in hydraulic characteristics of the channel and environmental damages. However, the range of temporal and ...

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Drought Severity Using Drought Indices and Deterministic and Geostatistical Methods (Case Study: Zayandehroud River Basin)

Drought monitoring is a fundamental component of drought risk management. It is normally performed using various drought indices that are effectively continuous functions of rainfall and other hydrometeorological variables. In many instances, drought indices are used for monitoring purposes. Geostatistical methods allow the interpolation of spatially referenced data and the prediction of v...

First record of Nais elinguis Müller, 1773 (Annelida: Oligochaeta: Naididae), Spatio-temporal patterns of its population density and biomass production along two estuaries in the South Caspian Sea, Mazandaran Province, Iran

The cosmopolitan oligochaete worm, Nais elinguis, is common to fresh and brackish water habitats. This species was found while investigating the limnology of two rivers alongside the Iranian coasts and has not been reported in the Iranian freshwater fauna and Caspian Sea before. N. elinguis was collected bimonthly from Cheshmehkileh and Sardabrood estuaries using a Van Veen grab (0.03 m2) and S...
